About us

Since 2022 the hotel is owned by an ambitious family with an innovative vision about this historic country hotel.

Currently the hotel is undergoing renovations to create a unique combination of the hotel's historic soul and the trends of today. The hotel, which was built in 1889, has a rich history and is known for its classic architecture and elegant design, but some areas have become outdated over the years.

At our hotel, our mission is to exceed your expectations and create memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you're here for a romantic getaway, a solo adventure or a business trip we are committed to providing you with an unforgettable experience that celebrates the beauty and wonder of the three national parks that surround us.

Our team is dedicated to helping you explore and discover the beauty of the surrounding natural environment, whether it's through hike trials or other outdoor activities.

The story

The rich history of the Pollfoss Hotell starts with Christian A. Hjeltar who lived in the Skjåk area. Christain had taken two old cabins apart and brought them to the place where the Pollfoss Hotell now stands. When he arrived at this distinctive place, he put the two cabins back together again. Because Christian A. Hjeltar brought these two old cabins to this location, since 1889, it has become a place for travellers to stay overnight.

For many travellers the hotel formed a stopover along the way, to get your breath back after a long journey. The guests could eat and drink – there were even oats for the horses. Once the road across Strynefjellet was built, the two cabins could be into a hotel and guest house that could offer even more facilities to its travelling guests. The hotel and the location started to form a hub, where many travellers met up. After 1905 the hotel also attracted many famous guests, such as the writers, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnsons and Olav Aukrust, and even Queen Maud of Norway. Eventually, the stream of travellers increased, which meant that the hotel became even more famous, both at home and abroad.
